We are always delighted to hear from talented artists wishing to enquire about demonstrating at Art in Action. We also approach artists directly. Participation is by invitation.

An unsolicited invitation to demonstrate at Art in Action can be a formidable challenge for many artists because most are accustomed to working alone, often in isolation. It is easy therefore for an artist to conjure up an uncomfortable feeling that demonstrating at Art in Action would be like having to work in a ‘goldfish bowl’ with strangers looking on.

Although this feeling is understandable, it does not remotely reflect the reality. The real experience of participating at Art in Action immediately dispels all such fears and notions. In fact artists find it an immensely enriching experience. They are so delighted and uplifted by the experience that they look forward to being invited back. It is no exaggeration to say that for many demonstrating artists and craftspeople, Art in Action is one of the high points of their year.

Prospective participants wishing to be reassured can be put in touch with artists who have already demonstrated at the event.

There are two main criteria used when selecting participants.

As far as possible everyone who takes part should earn his or her living by their art or craft.
We are looking for highest standard of design and skill that we can find.

The main parts of the show are the demonstration areas where artists and craftspeople come and work, and are available to answer questions. They have their work around them for sale, but the emphasis is on working and showing people how things are made or created. Demonstrating artists are not charged to participate: in fact every facility is provided to allow them to be free to demonstrate and to be themselves.

In the demonstration areas we take a small commission on sales made by artists during Art in Action to help defray the cost of presenting the festival.

Another part of the show is The Market where craftspeople can rent space for three days to sell their work. They may demonstrate if they wish, but it is not obligatory.
